Vijay Merchant was a famous Indian cricketer who played in 10 Test matches for India. He was a right-handed batsman and an occasional right-handed middle-order bowler who had played all 10 Test matches against England. He was a batsman of rich class with different sections and developed an excellent footwork. He toured England in 1936 and topped the batting with 1745 runs at an average of 51.42. He scored 114 runs in Test matches in Manchester and scored 203 for the first wicket with Mushtaq Ali. He repetition with the score of 1942. In the 1946 tour of England, he scored 245 runs in five innings, which was 128 in the final test at Oval. He scored his third century in the first Test against England in 1951-52 and the highest score of 154 in Delhi and scored 211 for the third wicket with captain Vijay Hazare. In the domestic field, he represented the Bombay Tournament between 1929 and 1952 and the Hindu in Ranji Trophy in Bombay. After retirement, he became a cricket administrator, broadcaster, writer and national selector.
